I may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post, but I will NEVER mention products that I don't love or believe in. Anything I earn will be used to help support this blog so I can continue to inspire all you lovely readers.
If you’re vegan and reading this, then chances are you’re used to menu hacking and subbing beans for beef in your tacos and burritos on the regular. However, if you’re still living that omnivore life, you may not know about all the magical things you can do to a Taco Bell order to veganize your food.
I used to work in a vegan bubble where the majority of people I ever associated with were vegan. Not because I’m a vegan snob, but because the organization was all about animal rights. Now that I work somewhere different, I find that I am more easily able to share insight with people who are curious about living la vida vegan. Both types of jobs have positives and negatives, of course, but I do enjoy sharing bits about vegan foods I eat because a lot of the people I talk to just don’t realize how easy it really is!
Non-vegans I talk to are often shocked that I can eat Taco Bell because they have just never thought about it. As humans we have a tendency to think in relation to ourselves. For example, if someone mentions pizza, I think “vegan cheese pizza” because that’s what I am personally used to. So, I am sure that when I say “Taco Bell” people typically think “beef”, “chicken”, or “cheese”. Fortunately, TB has so many vegan options* that even my omni friends have texted me to ask for my “typical order” because its JUST. THAT. GOOD.
Tacos, Nachos, Burritos, Oh My! 🔔
I tend to stick with my favorites when ordering, but with a little creativity and an insatiable appetite, there are seriously countless combinations you can make. I am going to list my favorites in hopes they’ll inspire you to switch up your order a little!
While reading this delicious list, keep this graphic in mind!
You can add any of the following to your order to spice things up!
Crunchwrap Supreme 🥑
Hello beautiful little pocket of wonder. Not quite a taco, not quite a burrito, but a very holy marriage we all can get behind. Tortilla, do you take hard shell to be forever bonded to you all the hungry days of my life? This menu item haunts me on my healthiest days and has me counting down to my next cheat day. Here’s what to do:
- Sub beans for beef
- Ask for it”fresco” to remove the dairy and add pico de gallo. I personally do not like pico, so I just say “no cheese, no sour cream”
- HOLY GUACAMOLE- add guac if you know what’s good for you
- Dip in fave sauce. I am very sensitive, so I usually choose mild sauce, but feel free to use any of their sauce packets!
Crunchy Taco 🌮
So simple, yet so satisfying. Plus, it’s less than $1.50 and available in a party pack. I’m not telling you how to plan your parties, but I can guarantee you if you buy a vegan taco box from TB, I’m definitely going to show up. Here’s what to do:
- Sub beans for beef
- Repeat steps from crunchwrap above
- Have your taco & eat it too
Power Menu Veggie Bowl 🥗
This menu item totally gives me Chipotle vibes, and I’m here for it. Typically it comes with black beans, sour cream, cheese, seasoned rice, guacamole, pico de gallo, and avocado ranch sauce. Here’s what to do:
- Remove the sour cream, cheese, and avocado ranch sauce
- Add your favorite toppings!
Spicy Potato Soft Taco 🥔
As a potato aficionado, I often daydream that there’s no limit to the amount of potato tacos I can eat. I tend to have a “LIMIT DOES NOT EXIST” attitude when it comes to ordering these precious little tacos too. Did I mention that they’re only $1 right now? Here’s what to do:
- You actually do need to order these, I’m not kidding
- Ask for fresco to remove the dairy (chipotle sauce and cheese) and add pico (if that’s your thing)
- Add whatever your heart desires from the list above. I tend to go for mild sauce and gauc because that’s what my heart requires.
7-Layer Burrito 🌯
This burrito holds a special place in my heart. Back in the day, when I first went vegetarian at age 14, this was my number 1. I always longed for the days my mom would take me to TB so I could devour one of these (or two) and wash it down with a Baja Blast. Here’s what to do:
- Skip two of the layers: sour cream and cheese
- Consider carbo-loading by adding potatoes (because you’re worth it)
5 Honorable Mentions⭐
Don’t misunderstand, these items are delicious. I just sometimes forget about them because of my passion for my old standbys. Honestly, I should branch out more often!
- Spicy Tostada- ditch the cheese and chipotle sauce and add any of the above
- Bean Burrito- no cheese (classic!)
- Triple Layer Nachos- ditch the cheese, add the things
- Mexican Pizza- no beef or cheese, add any of the above
- Cinnamon Twists- yummy crunchy cinnamon sugar goodness and GASP the only thing on this list that you don’t have to adapt!
